The Do’s & Don’ts of Wig Care

Don’t Let This Happen to Your Wig!

Wigs are an investment — in your confidence, your look, and your everyday comfort. But just like natural hair, they need proper care and maintenance. Unfortunately, many wigs get ruined when they’re taken to stylists who are not trained in wig cutting or care.

Take a look at this example (photo above): the choppy, uneven cut has left the wig almost unwearable. This is why it’s so important to trust your wig with a specialist who understands wig construction, fiber type, and proper styling techniques.

At Peggy’s, every wig — whether purchased through her salon or brought in from somewhere else — is treated with expertise and care. Peggy can repair, resize, re-fit, and refresh wigs so that they look and feel natural again.

Do’s & Don’ts of Wig Care

Do:

  • Have your wig professionally fitted and cut. Wigs are not “one size fits all.” A proper fit makes it look natural and feel secure.

  • Bring older wigs back to life. If your wig has lost its shine, feels dry, or isn’t fitting the way it used to, Peggy can reshape, condition, and adjust it.

  • Seek expert repairs. Singed wigs from cigarettes, opening the oven door too close, or exposure to dry heat can often be repaired. Don’t throw it away — bring it in first.

  • Keep it clean with proper products. Peggy shampoos and conditions wigs with salon-quality, wig-safe products to keep fibers soft and natural.

Don’t:

  • Don’t use dish soap or fabric softener. Dawn and Downy may be household staples, but they will damage your wig fibers.

  • Don’t overspray with hairspray. Too much product can weigh the wig down, dry it out, and shorten its lifespan.

  • Don’t assume any stylist can cut wigs. Wig fibers behave differently than natural hair — it requires special tools and training.

  • Don’t give up on an old wig. Even if it seems worn out, there’s often a lot that can be done to restore it.
